“The tunic is inspired by the confluence of Russian, Sámi and Tlingit cultural influences that have shaped the traditional regalia of my ancestors. This design represents both an homage to the past and a celebration of the enduring connection between land, sea, and community within Tlingit culture. As a descendant of the Tlingit people, my roots trace back to the coastal region of Alaska. My grandmother, born at Wolf Lake near Teslin, and my grandfather, a Clan Leader of the Deisheetan, carried with them traditions that continue to inspire my work. My grandmother’s baptism in Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Juneau reflects the blending of Tlingit and Russian influences that have informed our community’s history. At the heart of this tunic is the killer whale emblem, a symbol of the Daḵłʼaweidí Clan to which I belong. The killer whale, guardian of the ocean, embodies compassion, family bonds, protection, and the guidance to return home. This connection is deeply personal, reflecting the values and identity of my clan.”

“La tunique est inspirée du mélange d’influences culturelles russes, samies et tlingit dans les costumes traditionnels de mes ancêtres. Ce motif est à la fois un hommage au passé et une célébration du lien indéfectible qui unit la terre, la mer et les Tlingit. Je suis de descendance Tlingit, et mes racines remontent à la région côtière de l’Alaska. Ma grand-mère, née à Wolf Lake près de Teslin, et mon grand-père, chef du clan Deisheetan, ont perpétué des traditions qui continuent d’inspirer mon travail. Le baptême de ma grand-mère à l’église orthodoxe russe Saint-Nicolas de Juneau reflète ce mélange d’influences tlingits et russes ayant façonné notre histoire. Au centre de la tunique se trouve l’emblème de l’orque, symbole du clan Daḵłʼaweidí auquel j’appartiens. Gardienne de l’océan, l’orque incarne la compassion, les liens familiaux, la protection et le chemin du retour chez soi. Ce lien est profondément ancré en moi et reflète les valeurs et l’identité de mon clan.” Minnie Clark
