Learning From Grandfather, 2024

Since completing my painting Working with Grandmothers (2009), which was very feminine, I have always wanted to create a partner piece, a masculine representation. The totem pole in the background represents grandfathers of the past, and their teachings that they’ve passed to the grandfather on the canvas. Everyone in the scene is dressed in a modern way, bringing it into today, while the drums and woven hats have been used by Tlingit people for generations. These 3 boys, varying in age, are showing that we’re still learning from grandfathers. One of them wears an orange shirt, to reference the Every Child Matters movement. The grandfather stands behind, drumming and singing, showing that the seated boys, given their own space, are following willingly. Jean Taylor
Depuis que j’ai terminé mon oeuvre Working with Grandmothers, d’inspiration très féminine, en 2009, j’ai toujours voulu lui créer une pièce partenaire, un pendant masculin. Le mât totémique en arrière-plan représente les grands-pères des générations passées et les enseignements qu’ils ont transmis au grand-père au premier plan. Les personnages sont tous habillés de façon moderne, ce qui situe l’oeuvre dans le présent; néanmoins, les tambours et les chapeaux tressés qu’on voit sont utilisés par les Tlingits depuis des générations. Les trois garçons, d’âges différents, témoignent du fait que nous apprenons toujours des grands-pères. L’un d’eux porte un chandail orange, en hommage au mouvement Chaque enfant compte. Le grand-père, debout, chante et bat la mesure; assis au sol, les garçons ont leur propre espace, mais suivent volontiers sa cadence. Jean Taylor
