“I was inspired to add sequins to highway signs for the 2024 version of the (s)Hiver Festival in Dawson City. I wanted to create a truly interactive piece that people living here could relate to. I completed my piece by installing all 6 signs up in front of the Dawson RCMP Detachment, a place that almost everyone drives by on the way to wherever they are going in town. In the darkest part of winter, the flash of people’s headlights on the sequins really made the signs sparkle. I received a lot of positive feedback from locals about how the signs made them smile. Driving the highway can be brutal at times, and I wanted to bring a little joy to an aspect of the highway we can all relate to! Creating Disco Highway was a way for me to both celebrate the highway, but also to entertain myself on the drive! As well, the Disco Highway is a metaphor for life in general. Yes, there may be construction ahead, or maybe a surprisingly big pothole, but it’s all going to work out in the end and we will all get where we are going eventually!” Erin Dixon
“J’ai eu l’idée d’ajouter des paillettes aux panneaux routiers pour l’édition 2024 du festival (S)hiver à Dawson. Je voulais créer une œuvre vraiment interactive à laquelle les gens d’ici pourraient s’identifier. J’ai terminé mon projet en installant les six panneaux devant le Détachement de la GRC de Dawson, un endroit où on doit passer en voiture pour aller en ville. Dans l’obscurité hivernale, les phares des voitures faisaient scintiller les paillettes. J’ai reçu beaucoup de commentaires positifs. On m’a dit que ces panneaux faisaient sourire. Conduire sur l’autoroute peut parfois être pénible, et je voulais apporter un peu de joie à cet aspect commun de la vie quotidienne! En créant Disco Highway, j’ai pu rendre hommage à l’autoroute et me divertir pendant mes trajets! C’est également une métaphore de la vie en général : oui, il y a parfois des travaux devant nous ou un nid-de-poule géant, mais tout finira par s’arranger et nous arriverons à destination! Il y a un peu de disco en chacun de nous, et c’est ce qui rend la vie digne d’être vécue et donne le goût de savourer les longs trajets.” Erin Dixon
